Riot police create chaos for no reason to suppress press freedom, pushing dozens of reporters out of fire exits and pulling a cordon
Riot police officers suddenly pushed the cordon towards the atrium in Shatin New Town Plaza phase III. Reporters followed close behind. But suddenly another team of riot police rushed towards the reporters in the rear, pinning many of them between the two riot squads. Nearly a hundred reporters on the scene were forced to stand outside a fire door next to the passageway. The police attempted to close the entrance to the mall and push reporters outside, during which the fire door handle was damaged. The scene was quite chaotic, with a verbal altercation between police officers and reporters. The reporter complained to the Police Media Liaison Cadre at the scene that if the police were performing their lawful duties, the reporter had the right to monitor. However, one of the police media liaison officers at the scene responded, “It’s not you who are monitoring us” and the reporter pointed out his mistake saying that all citizens have the right to monitor.
