Man Arrested for Speech, Police Abusing Power to Lay Charges
A construction worker suspected of inciting others to besiege government buildings and take part in illegal assembly through social media was arrested on 16 October 2019.
According to Chief Inspector Lau Wan-tat of Organised Crime and Triad Bureau, the Police arrested a 37-year-old construction worker at a flat in Yat Kwai House, Kwai Chung Estate, at 7 a.m for posting false allegations on social media targeting police, such as rumors that some arrested people were beaten to death in detention, and for inciting others to besiege government buildings. Lau refused to disclose the actual content of the suspect’s online allegations on the grounds of on-going investigations. A computer and three mobile phones believed to be linked with the case were seized.
