After being blasted by blue jets of water, the railings, stairs, light decorations and flower troughs were stained and contaminated by irritating scents and chemicals. The Tsim Sha Tsui area had returned to normal after 5 PM, and citizens voluntarily went to help clean up the mosque.
In response to the fiasco, senior superintendent Wong Wai Shun defended the use of water cannon truck by claiming that it was done as the lowest degree of force to disperse the crowding protestors, and it was done after careful consideration and in the pretense that alternative solutions were absent. Being a member of ethnic minority in Hong Kong, superintendent Swalikh Mohammed further defended the action, ” our goal was to disperse, and the ultimate goal was to protect the mosque… the water landed at the entrance, and was not directly aimed at the mosque.”
